2 Day class (16 hrs)

Description
This two‐day course is geared for trail volunteers and will cover natural surface trail design,
construction, maintenance and crew leader training. The focus is teaching you about long term
sustainability that can reduce overall maintenance needs and user impacts on natural resources.
Each day will consist of a half day (approximately 3 hours) of classroom time with a powerpoint
presentation and a half day (approximately 4 hours) of field work to emphasize the hands on practicality
of what we discussed in the classroom.
Day One (Trail Design, Layout and Construction)
This will cover the aspects of how to properly design and layout a trail. We will discuss issues on how to
avoid erosion, user conflicts, and impact problems through design. It will give you a good working
knowledge of what causes trails to erode through water and soil relationships. Proper hand tool use
and safety, trail corridor clearing, building full bench cut trail, and how to build turns.
Day Two (Trail Maintenance and Crew Leader Training)
This portion will cover maintenance issues on well designed and poorly designed trails. We will discuss
how to do a trail assessment, identify problems and some drainage solutions. Techniques for rerouting
and reclaiming damaged trails. A trail crew leader must have a basic set of technical trail work skills,
coordinate work party activities, motivate volunteers and have a primary focus on safety and efficiency.
By organizing the workday, getting your crew(s) to the work site, and overseeing the project and/or trail
work session.
Field work
The first day will involve hands‐on layout and flagging exercise using the sustainable trail guidelines.
Review your knowledge constructing a full bench cut section of trail, with possible corridor clearing
activities. Then on the second day each student will lead a crew and apply some standard maintenance
practices, possible including drainage solutions and techniques to reroute and reclaiming damaged trail.
